So yea, Skynyrd is still a BIG deal for some folks down in these parts. There are still plenty of local venues where patrons will come up during setup and want to know "what kind of Skynyrd have ya'll got for us tonight?" I don't have a bit of doubt in my mind this cartoon was inspired by the artist attending the Pink Floyd show and hearing someone yell out those very words, in earnest. Several years ago Pink Floyd played at Legion Field in Birmingham and the next week in the UAB student paper was a cartoon of a packed stadium with a stage up front and over the crowd was a balloon coming from some random person in the crowd, containing these words. Then you have the (mostly) younger generation who sees the current lineup and says "I don't understand all the hoopla". Either you are a hick who plays it (badly) until everyone else pukes, or you have too much respect for the legacy to sully it with tying to pull off NFN covers, but enjoy doing (for example) a reggae version of Sweet Home. It (Skynyrd) is a touchy subject here in Alabama. It's a great song probably one of my all-time favorite Southern Rock songs. I can already do it at about 3/4 speed, and I know if I just keep working it, I will pull it off, and we will do the song. I know, I know, probably to some people it doesn't sound all that hard, but for me, this is a major accomplishment. I spent a few hours working on the twenty or so second piano solo, and it appears I am possibly going to be able to nail it. I said, "well, people already shout out 'Freebird,' so why not play that?" and that's how that started.Īnyway, our guitar player has been playing some of the guitar breakdown from "I Know a Little," at some of our rehearsals lately, and he and the drummer want to play it. She said we should play a more well-known Skynyrd song, and I said under no circumstances would I play "Sweet Home Alabama," and she wanted "Tuesday's Gone," or "Simple Man."

In truth, I think she just didn't want to master the bass line. She ruled the band like an iron-fisted dictator, and when I said I wanted us to learn "I Know a Little" from the "Street Survivors" album, (in my opinion, their very best work,) she complained that no one would know it.

Few people know the reason we play "Freebird." The fact is, early on, I had to get my wife's approval for every song I wanted to add to her precious setlist.
